Teaching Artist – Harlem School of the Arts

Employment Opportunity 

Harlem School of the Arts seeks passionate, experienced teaching artists to provide arts education and training to students at its campus in Harlem this upcoming fall semester. Teaching artist opportunities are available in several different theatre courses.  Teaching Artists are professional artists who teach and integrate their art form, perspectives, and skills into classroom settings.

Job Summary: 

HSA teaching artists should have a track record of artistic excellence in their professional artistic work as well as a demonstrated depth of knowledge within an artistic discipline.  Teaching artists will collaborate with the HSA team to customize arts programming and lesson plans across diverse age and ability levels.  A strong understanding of arts learning standards and experience adapting curriculum for different age groups and learning environments is required. Experience in public school classrooms and/or working with urban youth is preferred. 

Successful candidates will enjoy working with children and have formal training and/or experience in arts education, an arts discipline, or traditional arts practice.  He or she will be eager to cultivate relationships within a diverse, multicultural, community. 

Teaching artist positions are part-time, non-exempt positions and may include some weekend hours, depending upon availability. 

We are seeking teaching artists in the following courses:

Acting for Film & TV () 

Beginning TV: Commercial Acting ()

Meisner Acting Techniques: Audition-Based and Pre-Prep ()

Intro to Stage Combat ()

Dramatic Storytelling: Plays and Screenplays ()

Classical Theatre ()

The ideal candidate will be:

• Engaging in his or her teaching methods, yielding quality student work
• Confident in busy, non-traditional classroom settings
• Collaborative and cooperative, with an interest in shared goals and objectives
• Experienced in classroom management techniques
• Organized, reliable, well-prepared, and consistent
• Supportive of the mission of Harlem School of the Arts 

Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in arts and/or arts education or a related field or equivalent professional experience
• 1-3 years experience teaching students in a school or community setting
• Experience creating developmentally appropriate sequential lesson plans 
• Ability to assess progress and success of students and adapt as needed (in teaching style, materials, equipment, and, sequencing)
• Spanish language skills a plus
