Physician Assistant

A Physician Assistant (PA) is an individual who is academically and clinically prepared to provide healthcare services under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician or surgeon.

The Physician Assistant acts as an agent for the supervising physician. The orders given and the tasks performed by the Physician Assistant are considered the same as if they had been given and performed by the supervising physician. (A supervising physician or surgeon is one who: Is currently licensed to practice medicine in California; licensed by the Medical Board of California to supervise Physician Assistants; a current member in good standing with the medical staff of the hospital.)

A current California license or valid interim license to practice as a Physician Assistant. Must be ethical, professional and courteous to patients, physicians and co-workers.

Required:

Elicit a detailed and accurate history from a patient, perform an appropriate physical examination, and make an assessment and diagnosis from all available information.

Initiate, review and revise treatment and therapy plans.

Record and present pertinent data in a manner meaningful to the physician or surgeon.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.

Assess and interpret data reflective of the patient’s status requirements and age specific needs, and provide appropriate care based upon the results of the assessment.

Assist the supervising physician or surgeon in conducting rounds, and in routine clinic follow-up of patients. Develop and implement, with the physician’s assistance, patient management plans.

Assist the supervising physician with the recording of progress notes in both the in-patient and out-patient settings.

Order or transmit an order for x-ray, other studies, therapeutic diets, physical/occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and nursing services.

Order or transmit an order for, perform or assist in the performance of laboratory procedures, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures.

Initiate arrangement for admissions, complete forms and charts pertinent to the patient’s medical record, and provide services to patients requiring continuing care, including patients at home.

Perform routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care to include debridement of wounds and burns.

Insertion of intravenous access catheters. Start, superimpose, and discontinue intravenous fluids.

Under the supervision of their supervising physician or surgeon perform minor surgical procedures which are customarily performed under local anesthesia, such as removal of foreign bodies from the skin, incision and drainage of superficial skin infections and abscesses, removal of sutures and dressing changes.

Manage simple and/or stable chronic conditions and assist in the management of more complex illnesses and injuries.

Take the initiative in performing evaluative and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations.

Administer accurate vitamin-based IV therapy treatments for patients on-site or in-home, office, and other settings.

Instruct and counsel patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regiments, normal growth and development, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance.

Initiate and facilitate the referral of patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies and resources within the community.

Administer medication to a patient, or transmit orally or in writing on a patient’s record or in a transmittal order, a prescription from his/her supervising physician or surgeon to a person who may lawfully furnish the medication or medical device.

• For written drug orders the with the current issue of the Physician’s Desk Reference as a reference for indications, side effects, contraindications, and other pertinent information will be used.
• The Physician Assistant may only issue written drug orders for Schedule II-V controlled substances under a patient specific order from their supervising physician or surgeon.
• When appropriate, the Physician Assistant may authorize refills of medications given a patient by their supervising physician or surgeon in an amount sufficient to last until the patient’s next scheduled appointment with the physician, within the boundaries of the above mentioned formulary.

Act as first or second assist in surgery under the supervision of the supervising physician.

Document services provided and preparation of special reports such as discharge or transfer summaries.

Assure countersignature and dating of all medical records written by the Physician Assistant within thirty (30) days from the time care was given.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Pay Range:

Approximately $144,000.00 per year (or $75/hour on a full 40-hour work schedule)
