The Douglass Theatre is a historically significant, culturally important resource located in the city's museum district. Constructed in 1921 by African American entrepreneur Charles Henry Douglass, the theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a landmark museum by the State of Georgia.
The Friends of the Douglass Theatre Complex, Inc. is the operating entity for the theatre, which is owned by the City of Macon. The theatre's mission is well-articulated:
The mission of the Douglass Theatre is to provide the community a theatre for multi-cultural performances, films, and lectures and to preserve the African-American artistic and social legacy of the Douglass through exhibits and programming.
The vision of the Historic Douglass Theatre is to reflect the diverse tastes and interests of our community through the preservation and presentation of the African American cultural heritage for all to engage, appreciate, and enjoy.
