Junior U.S. Immigration Attorney

We are a boutique law firm that specializes exclusively in U.S. immigration law. We are seeking a junior-level U.S. licensed lawyer with 0 to 2 years of experience to work as a U.S. immigration attorney in our downtown Toronto office (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

• Duties and Responsibilities

Initially, you will be responsible for drafting applications, conducting legal research, and communicating with clients through emails and phone calls. The Managing Attorney for the firm will be the attorney of record for the applications that you prepare. More specifically, you will have the following duties during your initial period of employment with our firm:

• Draft and prepare applications and petitions (family-based petitions and applications, work visa petitions and applications, US waiver applications, etc.)
• Conduct legal research (research and review case law, review authoritative sources such as the FAM, the CFR, the INA, etc.)
• Communicate with clients via email and phone
• File petitions with the USCIS and file applications with the US Consulate and the Admissibility Review Office
• Assist the Managing Attorney with various tasks
• Prep clients for their visa interviews
• Other duties as required

Once you have gained sufficient experience, you will be responsible for working with and managing a law clerk, consulting and retaining prospective clients, and managing client accounts. You will also serve as the attorney of record for cases prepared by the clerk. More specifically, once you have gained sufficient experience you will have the following duties with our firm:

• Conducting consultations and retaining prospective clients
• Delegating work to law clerks
• Managing law clerks
• Reviewing applications prepared by law clerks
• Serving as the attorney of record on cases
• Managing client accounts
• Managing various components of the firm’s operations
• Other duties as required

• Types of Cases You will be Working On

You will work on the following types of cases:

• E-2 and E-1 cases (both consulate and USCIS filing)
• TN cases (both port-of-entry filing and USCIS filing)
• L-1 cases (both port-of-entry filing and USCIS filing)
• H-1B cases
• O-1 cases
• US waivers for Canadians (I-192 and I-212)
• US waivers for non-Canadians
• Family-based immigration (I-130, Adjustment of status, NVC processing, and immigrant visa processing)
• Employment-based immigration (EB-1 and EB-5)
• Renunciation of US citizenship cases
• Claim to US citizenship cases
• Legal research
• Numerous other US immigration matters

• Training

You will receive training in regards to US immigration law and procedure. Such training may require you study and even take in-office exams.

• Qualifications

As a result of the requirements set by the Law Society of Upper Canada, our firm can only hire candidates that meet one of the below requirements:

1. Licensed in any state in the US for at least three years;

2. Licensed in any state in the US and licensed in Ontario; or

3. Licensed in the state of Illinois.
