ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CAMP INSTRUCTOR

Environmental Education Camp Instructors:

  Join our mission to teach environmental science and impart a passion for the ocean on beautiful Catalina!  Help us make “world changers” out of camp participants.  Teach character traits and build environmental awareness.  Instructors receive training in all required subjects.  Staff must attend all staff meetings.  This position is for missionary-minded individuals who are passionate about building up to today’s youth through spiritual guidance and outdoor activities. 

Qualifications:  
Education/experience in a science, education, or outdoor ministry-related field is preferred but not necessary.  Most important is the desire to work with youth in the environment.  Applicants must have a minimum of an AA degree or an equivalent of college credits.  This position requires lifeguard and CPR certification, which is provided during staff training.  A physical fitness test will be given with the following requirements: the ability to swim at least 350 yards without stopping and be able to lift at least 40 pounds.   A willingness to travel between Catalina Island and MSA’s ship program as needed is desired (travel expenses while camp is in session are paid by MSA).  High moral character, ability to exercise good judgment, and willingness to work with flexibility as part of a team is essential.

Instructors will teach a wide array of topics that include marine biology, astronomy, ecology, natural history, physics, and survival skills.  Activities include kayaking, snorkeling (day and night), hiking, high ropes, devotions, skit night, and other educational activities and games.  Instructors receive training in all required subjects, as well as how to convey the material in an engaging manner to children.  In addition to the above-mentioned responsibilities.  They will also assist with some basic camp program maintenance such as preparing for and cleaning up after labs, assisting with meal clean up, boat upkeep, and other duties pertinent to the operations of a smooth program.  Some community volunteer work is required.    


Season Dates: 3/2/2022-10/31/2022

Pay Rate:                            Between $2,200 -$2,500 value per month (includes food and housing valued at $697 per  Month)
Accommodations:            Room provided 7 days per week, the board provided while camp is in session.


Location: Catalina Island and San Pedro (must be willing to relocate for program locations). Staff accommodations are rustic cabins.
