English to Haitian Creole translator - Volunteer Position - JD - Haiti Now

Haiti-Now is dedicated to empowering Haitian girls living in domestic servitude to overcome poverty and exploitation to achieve economic security.

When onboarding your first assignment will be to start a fundraising campaign. Haiti Now will provide further guidance for you to have a quick and successful fundraiser.

Role brief:

We are seeking an experienced English/Creole translator to interpret and facilitate effective communication with individuals, companies, courts, schools, or other interested parties.

review our survey questions from cultural appropriateness and alignment point of view, and translating the aims of the questions in Creole assuring the right understanding from the child's perspective. The objective is to capture the aim of the questions and translate them into a 10 years old language of a restavek child. 

Responsibilities: 

• Carefully listens to or reads content including jargon and acronyms in the original language.

• Understands and analyzes what is being said or written, and the message, intent, and nuances being communicated.

• Reproduces statements or questions in the desired output language.

• Provides simultaneous interpretation (SI) or consecutive interpretation (CI) depending on the desired outcome.

• Uses equipment such as microphones or headsets as needed to ensure precise and timely translations or interpretations.

• Gathers develops and maintains lists of terminology and information that may be used in technical translations such as legal or medical materials.

• Protects the confidentiality of the information and adheres to any related ethical or professional codes.

• Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Fluency in, and thorough understanding of, the primary language(s) being translated: The Creole must be the mother tongue.

• Completed 1st to 12 th grade in Haiti  

• Bachelor degree desired (verifiable) 

• Superior verbal and written communication skills in both languages.

• Excellent listening skills and auditory recall as needed to remember spoken words and accurately reproduce them in the desired language.

• Ability to commit  Volunteering for  5+ hour/ week

Preferred skills: Knowledge and experience with a non-profit with content management, customer relationship management or related systems and software. Knowledge of Slack, Trello and Google drive, google docs, google sheets.
