Description: Reporting to the President, the Director of Gender Equity provides leadership for Kalamazoo College’s efforts to ensure compliance under Title IX through a program of education, culture change, and compliance, and to support a culture of sexual respect throughout the campus. The Director of Gender Equity will monitor the campus climate to identify opportunities for improvement and to ensure that the College has adequate resources and grievance procedures for students, faculty and staff in resolving complaints under Title IX; will oversee investigations of Title IX complaints; will collaborate with campus offices and partners including Student Development, Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Campus Safety, and others. The Director of Gender Equity has ultimate responsibility for compliance with Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and the Campus Save Act. The Director of Gender Equity is the College’s Title IX coordinator. The Director of Gender Equity will also play a key role in assessing and responding to issues of gender equity broadly.

Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the College’s Title IX efforts including college‐wide education, training, and outreach programming related to gender equity, as well as compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to support and enhance a climate of sexual respect on campus.
  • Serving as a central resource for all constituencies on the wide range of issues addressed by Title IX and the Clery Act, including but not limited to sexual harassment, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking.
  • In collaboration with others, working to ensure clear, accurate, timely, and consistent communication related to Title IX and related policies/requirements.
  • Ensuring that policies and procedures related to protection of minors on campus and intimate partner violence complaints reflect best practice and are clearly communicated and understood by all campus constituents.
  • Staying abreast of national trends related to as well as changes within Title IX, and related state and federal laws and regulations; monitoring the College’s policies and procedures accordingly; collaborating in revisions of College policy.
  • Providing updates to President’s Staff, Community Council, and other relevant groups regarding the effectiveness of the College’s compliance efforts.
  • Facilitating ongoing assessment of the impact of education, training, and outreach efforts related to Title IX and gender equity.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualities and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in a relevant discipline or juris doctorate.

Higher education experience is strongly preferred. Additional desired qualities and qualifications include:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a relevant field;
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret in the broadest sense, federal and state equal opportunity and non‐discrimination laws and regulations, including Title IX and others;
  • Strong organizational, planning, analytical, and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • A talent for listening as well as experience facilitating difficult conversations with and among a wide range of constituencies;
  • The maturity and integrity to exercise sound judgment and maintain a clear and steady commitment to the highest and best principles, particularly when faced with complex, ambiguous, and highly charged situations;
  • A high degree of discretion and the ability to maintain confidential information;
  • The ability to build rapport, develop allies, and inspire cross‐departmental and cross divisional action to enhance equity in the Kalamazoo College campus community.
