Certified Athletic Trainer

Certified Athletic Trainers (AT) will evaluate and treat tactical athletes in order to enhance and optimize human performance by focusing on the full integration of human performance capabilities in the delivery of athletic training/physical therapy. The AT under the direction and supervision of the 93 AGOW Physical Therapist (PT) Officer in Charge (OIC) shall collaborate with the medical team to treat, screen, optimize human performance, prevent injuries and rehabilitate injuries.

Job Responsibilities
 

• Assist Squadron Medical Elements (SMEs) assigned to the 93 AGOW units, with integrated Warrior Athlete Center of Excellence (WACoE) with the full spectrum of human performance optimization and rehabilitation.
• Perform physical therapy modalities under the direction of the 93 AGOW Director of Human Performance or appointed supervisor. Modalities include but are not limited to warm and cold whirlpools, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, iontophoresis, phonophoresis, therapeutic massage cryotherapies, manual therapies and exercise protocols as well as employing proper sterile techniques ad universal precautions in the care of open wounds.
• Ensure equipment and facilities are properly organized and utilized, and are inspected and in safe working condition. These duties shall include cleaning on a daily/weekly basis as directed by the 93 AGOW Director of Human Performance. Report to the 93 AGOW Director of Human Performance any equipment not in safe working order.
• Provide athletic training services to patients including on/off site emergency evaluation, triage and treatment in accordance with local MDG policy MDGI 44-1.
• Assess patients to screen for risk factors that would increase their risk of injury/illness. Theses screening procedures may include, but are not limited to musculoskeletal flexibility assessment, muscular strength and endurance assessment, cardiovascular fitness assessment, postural and ergonomic assessment and body composition assessment.
• Design and implement strength training and/or conditioning programs to reduce the risk of injury and illness.
• Instruct and counsel patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, human performance and rehabilitation maintenance.
• Coordinate and supervise fitness and medical readiness of assigned patients.
• Ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meeting individual patient needs.
• Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefits of the sports medicine program for 93 AGOW personnel.
• Attend weekly staff meetings with squadron commander as needed to review and evaluate medical readiness and identify opportunity for improvement.
• Facilitate and instruct patients to enhance their general knowledge of sports medicine concepts, injury prevention strategies, self-rehabilitative techniques and functional movement assessment in order to develop independence of action and allow participation in their own fitness prescriptions.
• Select, apply and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions using best evidence to guide those decisions. Interventions used by Athletic Trainers include but are not limited to techniques to restore joint range of motion and muscle extensibility, exercises to improve strength, endurance, speed and power, activities to improve balance, neuromuscular control and coordination, agility training, exercises to improve cardiorespiratory fitness, sports specific and/or functional exercises.
• Provide neuromuscular control and corrective exercises.
• Provide postural functional exercises and self-corrective movements.
• Provide appropriate reevaluation of targeted populations.
• Provide preventative taping, bracing and orthotic use for the prevention and treatment of injuries and for the protection of the athlete during practice or competition.
• Provide mentor and preceptorship to Athletic Training, Exercise Physiologist and/or Physical therapy Interns under 93 AGOW approved Training Affiliation and Official Memorandums of Understanding (MOU).
• Document all patient encounters using mandated government systems in accordance with guidance and direction. Since there are different documentation timeframes, training will be provided to the employee according to the programs they are associated with.  Assess the mobility of patients using a range of tests and utilize the results to develop a patient care program and a therapy timeline.

Qualifications and Experience

Desired candidate will have graduated from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Candidate may possess a Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from an accredited institution.

 

Must have at least three (3) years of professional experience working with college level or higher athletes and/or tactical military personnel of which one (1) year of full-time experience must be within the last three (3) years.

Candidates with Master's degrees require only a minimum of two (2) years professional experience working with college level or higher athletes and/or tactical military personnel.
