THE POSITION

Under the direction of a school administrator or designee, patrols school campus, parking areas, and adjacent areas to prevent unruly behavior and unsafe or illegal acts and to ensure the safety of students, staff, and property; enforces State laws and school and District rules and regulations.

 

CURRENT OPENING: Two 10 month/40 hours per week full-time positions and one 10 months/22 hours per week part-time position. The tentative hours for the part-time position are from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Salary placement will be on Range 17 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($21.83 per hour) of this salary range.

Eligibility lists typically last for 12 months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

 

NOTE: Answers to the supplemental questions must be submitted with your application. A copy of your certificate of completion (Penal Code 832.2), or proof of enrollment in an approved School Security Training class, that is authorized and recognized by the State of California as meeting the SB1626 and ED. CODE 38001.5 must be submitted with your application. Proof of valid CA Driver License and car insurance must be submitted by the final test part. Essential Duties

 

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

  • Patrols and monitors school campus, parking areas, and adjacent areas for unsafe conditions, hazards, illegal acts, suspicious activities, unauthorized persons, or other safety-related conditions or activities.
  • Maintains safety and security of school campus grounds and protects students, staff, and property.
  • Enforces State laws and school and District rules and regulations relating to smoking, truancy, tardiness, vandalism, parking, and other violations.
  • Counsels students, visitors, and District personnel on District rules and regulations and appropriate behavior.
  • Communicates with District personnel and law, fire and safety personnel/agencies to receive and exchange information related to security, vandalism, crimes, investigations and/or safety issues.
  • Contacts District Police Officers or law enforcement in emergency situations, to make arrests, or as appropriate.
  • Responds to and investigates instances involving assault, fighting, battery, illegal substance use and other illegal acts occurring on District property and apply appropriate interventions.
  • Prepares written reports pertaining to campus security and assigned duties including, but not limited to, reports related to incidents, accidents, vandalism, theft, etc.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education: No education is required.

 

Experience: One year of experience working in the field of law enforcement or security.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Certification of completion of school security officer training course developed by the Bureau of Investigative Services of the Department of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in accordance with California Education Code Section 38001.5 (SB 1626).
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license.
  • Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle that meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continues to maintain insurability.
  • First aid and CPR certificates are required within the first three months of employment (provided by the District).
  • May be required to work adjustable work schedules including evenings, weekend and holiday assignments.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

 

Ideal candidates will have

 

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures and practices of effective law enforcement and security.
  • Safe monitoring methods and procedures.
  • Traffic and crowd control techniques. Radio procedures and equipment.
  • Laws and ordinances concerning search and seizure, theft, burglary, malicious mischief and trespassing.

 

Ability to:

  • Perform effectively and assertively in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Remember details such as faces, license plate numbers, names and incidents. Administer emergency first aid and CPR.
  • Complete Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (NCPI) training.
