Organization Description:

Mountain and Sea Educational Adventures (MSA) was founded in 1997 as a non-profit organization with a mission to teach outdoor education in a manner which increases the awareness of the environment, raises the spirit of youth, and builds their confidence.  Our program sites are located on Catalina Island, The San Bernardino Mountains, & ENHYDRA (our flagship vessel).  MSA is a faith based science and educational 501C-3 nonprofit organization which works with both public and Christian organizations.  We teach science concepts in the midst of God’s creation, fostering growth and building character. Teachers and parents are calling MSA the most innovative and “student challenging” outdoor education camp in California!  Join our team and find out why! 

Join our mission to reach young people at beautiful Catalina Island & Lake Arrowhead. Help us make “world changers” out of kids ages 10-15.  As a fundamental part of our operations; ensure that our campers and staff are well fed and nourished, our galley is well managed and stewarded well.

Candidate will cook for our Catalina Camp at  Whites Landing, as well as on our 112' Floating Sea Camp Vessel Enhydra. 

• Live onsite at Whites Landing and San Pedro ship.
• Whites Landing serves up to 250 Campers, & Ship camp serves 20-40 passengers.
• Manage commercial galley on site or ship. Be in charge of organization, efficiency and cleanliness.
• Menu planning - healthy, hearty meals for campers with high activity days.
• Provision planning 
• Food Preparation and on time serving.
• Support staff: Oversee staff assisting in food prep, dishroom and clean up as well as dining hall assistant.
• Manage 2 other cooks 
Will be responsible for all food purchases and keeping within budget,
Will be responsible for bi weekly inventory of all food.
There can be very long days candidate for this position should be able to be on their feet for 8-10 + hours per day.
 
You will reside at White's Landing and during summer ship camps you will reside on the ship
• Accommodations: Room provided 7 days per week on site at White's Landing in main house , board provided while camp is in session

 
Qualifications: 
Experience cooking in volume, 3 meals per day + snacks.  You will live at camp and may have to share a room. Current Food Managers certificate , manage commercial kitchens & galley that meets strict health department codes,  Most important is the desire to support an organization that works with youth in the environment.   A willingness to travel between Catalina Island and MSA’s mainland programs as needed is desired (travel expenses while camp is in session are paid by MSA).  High moral character, ability to exercise good judgment , maintain a very tight serving schedule and willingness to work with flexibility as part of a team is essential.  Working within very strict schedules, with staff and within a budget is critical. There will be long hours . Ability to shine when serving children campers  

Season Dates:               Start date of March 14,.2022  possibility of additional camps later in the year. Schedule will vary on attendance at camp.

Pay Rate:                           Salary position: $3,400 per month including room & board 
                                           • Promotion after 1-2 years for this position: Food Service Director
                                           5% increase upon satisfactory evaluation every 6 months.



Location: 
Residence and Main kitchen are located at Whites Landing on Catalina Island
ENHYDRA is a 112 foot vessel whose home berth is at the Southern California Marine Institute, 820 South Seaside Avenue, Terminal Island, CA 90731 and travels to and from that berth to various locations on Catalina Island, and at other times harbors along the Southern California coastline.
Mountain Location at Camp Pollock is located in the Lake Arrowhead area.
