POSITION PURPOSE In the service of others, the Vice President of Commercial Lending will make it possible and necessary to improve the quality of our members and employees lives in a socially responsible manner while focusing on sustainable and profitable growth through an unrelenting and tireless drive towards operational excellence. The VP of Commercial Lending will be responsible for developing business relationships and monitoring members’ lending and depository needs. They will develop and implement the absolute best (by any measure) organizational policies and procedures. They will also support, develop and lead not only departments which directly report to them, but provide leadership to all areas of the credit union to make us the best in business by any measure. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES Participate in the credit union’s long- and short-term strategic planning. Set the Business Lending Department’s strategic plans to align with the credit union’s business plan. Establish and ensure the implementation of target goals for the departments. Report the level and trends in business loan risk to the board and senior management. Manage overall risk in the business loan portfolio. Establish the processes and systems for the loan underwriting function and ongoing risk monitoring of the business loan portfolio Communicate credit union goals and direction with all employees to ensure a supportive, positive and clear understanding of rules, regulations, requirements and expectations. Work closely with the Executive Team to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Board approved strategic plan. Oversee and monitor departmental functions to achieve strategic goals. Direct the work of loan managers to include underwriting, loan processing, loan documentation and approval or denial of all business loans. Support loan underwriting functions; provide direction and higher level loan decisions. Creates lists of prospective clients for sales leads and builds relationships with existing clients to maintain a strong referral pipeline. Participates in business events that are sources for business contacts or referrals. Solicits, develops, and services a wide variety of business loans and lines of credit, both secured and unsecured. Meets with and interviews loan applicants to understand the business, needs, abilities, and earnings to determine whether the loan would be an acceptable risk. Provides members appropriate and profitable financial solutions. Oversee the development and monitoring of performance standards in alignment with our vision. Provide mentoring, coaching, and training to support and develop managers and staff. Develop and oversee a strong cross-training program to develop staff competencies to maintain a high level of internal as well as external member service. Manage the hiring, staff development and evaluation processes in area of responsibility. Prepare, implement and supervise budget within area of responsibility to assure adherence to the credit union’s budget. Participate as a member of Business Lending Committee and Asset-Liability Management committee and assist in establishing and implementing credit union goals and objectives. Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the credit union by way of systems that will improve overall operation and effectiveness. Maintain current knowledge of regulations and trends to ensure effectiveness and compliance for areas of responsibility Review and provide approval of expenses within area of responsibility and level of authority. Professionally represent and promote the credit union at community activities and external functions. Research and evaluate feasibility of new business lending products. Develop and implement plans for expansion of business lending programs. Keep abreast of changes in the industry and changing trends in lending and pivot to changes in a way that maintains competitiveness. Cross sell credit union products and services, as appropriate. Work with managers and team members on complex issues to prevent loss to the credit union and support the membership. Develop and utilize performance metrics and reports for all areas of lending operations. (ex. Loss ratio analysis, delinquency, loan production, decision timings, quality control, etc., etc.) Perform additional duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position is responsible for consistent overall supervision, coordination and evaluation of the all business lending staff in accordance with credit union policies, procedures, past practices and applicable laws. Indirect responsibilities include mentoring all other credit union staff. PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS Performance is measured against the position goals and defined outcomes as outlined by the position. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Certification: 4 year college degree preferred plus ten years’ experience in a financial institution and 7 years, commercial/business lending, underwriting and strategic management; or a comparable combination of education and experience. Required knowledge: Knowledge of Commercial/Business Lending, Consumer Lending, Commercial Underwriting, Loan Servicing and general economic conditions and competitor’s rates and terms etc. This position requires that the employee gain a working knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements and how they will affect their work, the employee will comply with all requirements of the BSA and cooperate with the designated BSA Officer in assuring compliance. Experience Required: Experience using P.C. based software including Microsoft Office and lending systems etc. Skills/Abilities: Ability to project a professional appearance and positive attitude at all times. Excellent project management, communication and analytical skills.
