Overview: 

The Southern Museum is part of the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program and home to the steam locomotive “The General.” The Museum includes Civil War and railroad exhibitions, a recreation of an early 20th century locomotive factory, the Jolley Education Center, and a Research Center Library and Archives. The Visitor Services Assistant is responsible for conducting retail and ticket sales as well as offering assistance in tours, facility rentals, events, and/or other tasks as needed.
 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Open and close Southern Museum galleries.
  • Assist customers with ticket and retail sales.
  • Provide museum and tourism information while stationed inside the Southern Museum Ticket Booth and/or Gift Shop.
  • Provide staff support for tours, facility rentals, and events as necessary. 
  • Keep front museum areas and visitor materials organized and neat in appearance.
  • Label and stock merchandise. 
  • Assist with museum gallery and site inspections.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must possess proven visitor services and/or retail experience and be computer proficient. Employee will use Microsoft Office, Outlook, and the Southern Museum’s point-of-sale system. A basic understanding of or interest in American history is a plus but not required for the position. A willingness to learn and present basic tour information for school students and adults is required.  A high school diploma or GED is required.  
 

Schedule and Compensation:

This is a part-time position (approximately 24 hours per week) in which workdays will usually fall between Wednesday through Sunday, depending on the Southern Museum schedule and program needs. Employee must be willing to work at least one day of the weekend on a normal basis and work a flexible schedule as needed, including potential evening hours and holidays. Schedule is subject to change based on city/museum needs.
