JOB SUMMARY

The primary function of the Vice President of Operations is to orchestrate all Supply Chain activities into a single, seamless logistics process with the intent of achieving superior customer satisfaction, competitive logistics costs, highly flexible logistics capability and marketplace competitive advantage.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Specific tactical job activities of the Vice President of Operations include, but are not limited to, the following:
 

  • Monitor the daily performance of the various Supply Chain departments through the Division’s Performance Reporting System
  • React quickly to negative deviations in the Performance Reporting System with information dissemination, employee retraining or new or revised operational procedures
  • Maintain control of Division Customer Service and Customer Satisfaction levels through the Company’s CTE Program
  • Coordinate and optimize the Division’s operations through a series of frequent Production Meetings. These meetings may be informational, problem solving, performance review, training or brainstorming   
  • Maintain, modify and control the Division’s major Logistics Programs. These programs include Employee Productivity, Operational Quality, Inventory Control, Cycle Counting, Safety, Hazmat, Lock Out/Tag Out and DOT Security 
  • Develop and train logistics managers in Supply Chain understanding, decision making and the use of specialized management tools such as incremental supervision, organizational analysis, daily work scheduling, manpower planning, work sampling, and other management tools and techniques
  • Develop and train managers in the use of Supervisory Skills such as applicant interviewing, resume reading, employee training, handling problem employees and other Interpersonal/Human Relations activities
  • Establish and maintain a successful Company management and employee culture that fosters harmonious labor relationships, minimizes workplace contention or work disruption and poor employee morale
  •  Review and modify, as appropriate, warehouse operating procedures for such activities as receiving, put-away, replenishment, order selection, checking, loading, product slotting, returns processing and other internal operations
  • Review and modify, as appropriate, private fleet activities such as geographic delivery areas, delivery frequency, mix of trailer/straight trucks, vehicle routing and scheduling, mix of private fleet, UPS and common carrier modes, vehicle safety and accident reporting procedures
  •  Maintain control of the Division’s cost structure through budget preparation and review, bidding for non-labor expenses and selection of third party Supply Chain partners
  • Maintain a high space utilization within the distribution facility to provide expansion for sales growth, orderly control of inventory and optimized storage cost
  • Maintain and control the physical security and accuracy of the Division’s inventory through a comprehensive program of cycle counting, slot checks, audits of recording accuracy and data entry as well as specialized counts
  • Maintain and control the strategic aspect of inventory management to minimize inventory carrying costs and maximized inventory turns through product rationalization, disposal of old merchandise, returns to vendors and other disbursal alternatives
  • Maintain the physical security of the Division’s facility through maintenance of the Division’s security system, alerts to local police and other security options as required

 

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY

From a broad-based perspective, the role of the Vice President of Operations consists of ten primary or strategic initiatives:
 

  • Provide outstanding customer service and customer satisfaction with the operational aspects of our sales effort
  • Strategic planning and execution to enhance profitability, productivity and efficiency throughout the company’s operations.
  • Optimize all logistics operations within the Supply Chain
  • Train and develop first-line managers to decentralize decision – making and foster a proprietary sense of ownership (accomplished through weekly visits to the out-of-state distribution centers)
  • Minimize Supply Chain labor and non-labor costs
  • Maintain and incrementally improve the internal quality aspects of the logistics process
  • Ensure the security of the Division’s facility and assets
  • Develop a cooperative and team-oriented operations culture
  • Minimize contention with our bargaining unit and prevent disruption to our sales support (Next Union Contract Negotiations : in Tewksbury Massachusetts)
  • Maintain a comprehensive safety program with the objective of minimizing employee injuries and controlling insurance costs
  • Develop a long-range operation plan for the New England market which would insure continued support for the Company’s growth
  • Interact regularly with executive team and individual department heads to ensure that company operational priorities are aligned with total company direction
  • Continually investigate and introduce process improvement measures and present suggestions to CEO for consideration

 

QUALIFICATIONS / COMPETENCIES

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA), MBA in business administration, industrial engineering or related field.
  • 10 or more years of experience managing manufacturing plants.
  • Knowledge of industrial engineering, human resources laws and regulations, and employee relations skills.

This job operates in both a professional office environment as well as a warehouse environment.
