The STEAM Engine is a fast-growing 501(c)3 nonprofit STEM and Arts education startup and we are looking for a dynamic, results-oriented individual to join our growing team as a STEAM Instructor for our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) after-school clubs and summer day-camps. In this part-time role you will lead STEAM Engine programming at the STEAM Engine’s Community Partner Sites and Learning Studios across the greater Oklahoma City metro.

What do we provide?

  • Up to 20 hours per week of scheduled work, including 5 hours of flexible training and preparatory time per week for you to schedule and complete at your leisure
  • Mileage reimbursement for covering shifts, transportation between work sites, and other related scenarios
  • Support from our Executive Director and Director of Program Operations
What will you do?
  • Lead the delivery of STEAM-based programs (we provide training!) in after-school programs for groups of 12-15 elementary and middle school students in the community to bring the fun and wonder of STEAM to children across Oklahoma
  • Promote and foster the educational, social, physical, intellectual, emotional, vocational, and professional growth among program participants
  • Maintain a structured learning environment aligned with the STEAM Engine philosophy
  • Learn the STEAM Engine’s questioning and coaching strategies to increase student engagement
  • Individualize your approach for unique classrooms and diverse students
  • Share your creative ideas and collaborate with the STEAM Outreach Specialist and Executive Director on projects and programs
  • Follow STEAM Engine guidelines and safety protocols and those of our community partners
  • Prepare for your camps and clubs by organizing materials, managing inventory, and reviewing the curriculum
  • Maintain clear records and assist with data collection

Minimum Qualifications:

  • We take our students’ safety very seriously - you must be able to pass a Federal and State Criminal Background check to qualify for this role.
  • EITHER: Have a degree in an Education, STEM- or Arts-related field with at least one (1) year of experience working with elementary or middle school students in a formal or informal educational setting (youth programs, camps, volunteer, or classroom environments) –OR– Three (3) or more years experience working with elementary to middle school aged children in a formal or informal educational setting.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and the state minimum automobile insurance, with access to a vehicle. You must have the ability to travel within the Oklahoma City metro.
  • Align with the STEAM Engine’s values of Relationship, Ownership, and Stewardship.
  • Be a self-directed lifelong learner with a willingness to learn new STEAM skills, facilitation techniques, and curriculum.
  • At times, this is a physically demanding job- you must be able to walk, run, jump, crawl, stand for extended periods of time, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Classrooms can get noisy! You must be able to hear and respond to children in loud settings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Kids are counting on us. You must be dependable and reliable.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with online tools such as Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Experience working in low-income schools, communities, or organizations with children from a variety of age ranges and demographics.
  • Advanced degree in Education or STEAM field.
  • Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

 

Compensation and Benefits:

HOURS and WAGES: This is a part-time, 3-20 hours/week, non-exempt position with a starting pay of $15/hr.

SCHEDULE: Weekday shifts run from 2:30-5:30pm or 3:00-6:00 pm Monday-Friday. Occasional daytime, evening, and weekend hours may be required. Possibility for increased hours available, depending success in funding, grant writing and program growth.

LOCATION & TRAVEL: This role will primarily work at partner site locations across the OKC metro. Location assignments will vary on an eight-week schedule. Instructors will be expected to attend staff meetings, trainings, and attend to other administrative tasks in the office located in South OKC.
