Senior Backup Administrator (Lead Role) in the Centralized Operations department
The Role:
This individual will be a technical lead for the Backup Implementation Services (BIS) team.
Responsibilities of the role include assessing the backup environment and executing plans to remediate any open issues that are discovered.
This position will also be responsible for leading complex projects with the goal of implementation and migration of backup infrastructure devices, NetBackup (NB) master servers, NB media servers, DataDomain Disk appliances, Tape Drive & Tape Library infrastructure.
They will also review the existing infrastructure as it relates to support, develop policies, identify operational usage patterns as they relate to performance, provide improvements to SLAs, participate in RCA reviews, monitor backup/restore activity, manage storage capacity as it relates to backup images, assists with operational documentation.
The candidate must be proficient at scripting/programming for the purposes of creating and maintaining utility and automation tools to assist with any and all of the aforementioned tasks.
Responsibilities
Work with Engineering to help architect, design and test backup and recovery solutions.
Technical lead for complex projects that require high levels of skill in backup, recovery, operating systems and networking.
Deploy and decommission Netbackup Infrastructure devices.
On-board new storage devices into Data Centers and remote offices throughout the globe.
Perform Data Domain and Tape Library hardware firmware upgrades.
Perform NetBackup Installs & upgrades.
Assist with server migrations from a backup perspective
Assist with migrations of backups from various types of backup software to NetBackup
Support multiple operational and infrastructure related backup projects.
Perform in-depth analysis and problem determination/resolution as it relates to day-to-day operations support
NetBackup Master, Media and client server failures/management
NetBackup Disaster recovery and copy data management (SLPs, AIR, etc.)
IBM and Dell Tape libraries, Tape drives and media management
Dell/EMC DataDomain management
Veritas NetBackup Appliance management
Experience with administering backups for AWS and Azure
Life cycle management of the software and hardware portfolio
Develop & enhance Backup Process Flow
Open, modify and close change control tickets related to the management and maintenance of the backup infrastructure assets globally.
Open, modify and close level 2 incident ticket related to backup infrastructure assets and help assist other technology platform groups when necessary related to severity 1 incidents when required.
Ensure that all Backup Infrastructure is monitored on a daily basis & that the proper alerting is setup and sent to the right technology group.
Plan and execute new capacity additions for disk and tape systems, including standing up new systems from the ground up when required.
Create, modify and publish process & procedural documents that our team can leverage to support the Backup Infrastructure globally.
Implement standard configuration of the Backup Infrastructure to ensure consistency and supportability globally.
Communication of ideas and information effectively via oral and written communication to a diverse audience.
Collaborate with colleagues, clients and vendors from all over the world via enterprise collaboration tools such as Zoom, OneNote, etc.
Process Flow and Log Analysis for NB Master, NB Media, NB Client, SAN zoning for tape drives, SAN Disk for NB catalog, Tape Silo’s, Tape Drives, media pools, and firmware/software versions for these devices.
Work with Backup Engineering team to ensure designs/solutions are operationally sound from a support perspective.
Availability after normal business hours required; rotating on-call 24x7 support.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field from an accredited college/university or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
5-8 year’s hands on experience in a technical backup infrastructure operational role supporting Netbackup Master Server, Media Server, Data Domain and IBM tape library infrastructure.
2-4 years in Veritas, VMWare & Hyper-V API Backups, and networking
Experience with one or more of the following types of backup software
Backup Exec
Veeam
Comvault
Avamar
Excellent communication skill required; both written and verbal
Technical knowledge in Netbackup, Data Domain, Tape Libraries, Unix, Windows & Networks.
Ability to actively troubleshoot incidents and escalate appropriate
Strong process development and service delivery principles.
Proficient in usage and general administration of Windows and Linux based servers
Scripting skills in one or more scripting languages (Perl, python and PowerShell preferred)
Experience with using Change Control & Incident ticketing systems in a tightly controlled Enterprise IT environment
Understanding of ITIL and ISO operating guidelines; certification in ITIL preferred
Ability to manage and maintain own book of work.
