Research Associate, Microbiology

Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Help create, curate, and maintain fungal strain collection
- Organize frozen vegetative mycelium vials (FVMs)
- Prepare and autoclave media to be used for growing strains
- Perform experiments comparing the effects of various media on fungal growth and metabolite production
- Meticulously catalog and track strain information and historical data in Excel tables and databases
- Help establish a high throughput capability for purification and long term viable storage of diverse filamentous fungal strains
- Collaborate with colleagues from the Genomics team to acquire, characterize, and preserve fungal strains of interest from a variety of sources
- Collaborate with colleagues from the Synthetic Biology team to provide pure cultures of fungal strains for genetic manipulation
- Collaborate with the Natural Products Chemistry team to provide small and large scale fermentation broths as needed
Primary Job Requirements:
- B.S. in biology, microbiology, mycology, or related field
- Experience handling microorganisms with emphasis on filamentous fungi
- Experience preparing media and ability to use liquid dispensers and autoclaves
- Working knowledge of -80C freezers, centrifuges, shaker incubators, autoclaves, and biosafety cabinets
- Demonstration of good sterile technique and ability to handle a large number of strains daily
- Experience with streaking for isolates, dissecting and light microscopes
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task during daily routine
- A desire to be in a laboratory setting, being involved in the design and downstream generation of scientific data
