GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Medical Physicist, under the direction of the Chief Medical Physicist, works in consultation with Radiation Oncologists to provide radiation therapy to the Oncology patients. The Medical Physicist assists the physics and dosimetry sections of Radiation Oncology, including commissioning, acceptance testing of the equipment, calibration and maintenance of dosimetry and imaging systems, implementing treatment procedures and providing physics consultations in direct patient care activities.

Medical Physicist will be responsible for establishing and maintaining quality assurance, quality control and safety programs in accordance with the standards as determined by regulatory agencies. He/she will also be responsible and accountable for developing, implementing, reviewing, revising and monitoring patient care policies and procedures, standards and performance improvement activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Medical Physicist

: Supports the administration of the radiation safety program, including compliance with all regulatory/certification agencies, staff training, and supervision of radioactive source
ordering/handling/waste removal/disposal; may provide annual radiation safety in-service to Radiation Oncology staff.
: Assists in performance of the Quality Assurance on linear accelerators, simulators, HDR unit and any other radiation therapy treatment devices; maintains Quality Assurance program for all treatment modalities.
: Performs weekly chart reviews of Radiation Oncology treatment plans under direction of Chief Medical Physicist.
: Performs dosimetry calculations for external beam, brachytherapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy for Radiation Oncology, including in-vivo dosimetry and measurement system.
: Assures the accuracy of treatment unit parameters and settings used for patient treatment, including
accurate transfer of planning data between simulator, CT, treatment planning computer and treatment unit.
: Actively participates in implementation of new programs and technologies, such as information management system, treatment planning, and new modalities.
: Provides medical physicist consultation to physicians, staff and patients as needed.
: Assists in performance of acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment.
: Assists dosimetry staff in the performance of treatment planning, providing coverage when needed; assists in dosimetrist training.
: Assists in the design and fabrication of treatment aids and treatment beam modifiers.
: Assists Director/Operations Manager, Chief Physicist and Radiation Oncologists in planning for resource allocation and program operation, including on-going review of program policies and procedures.
: Attends/participates in Radiation Oncology Physics or related medical meetings; disseminates new information to appropriate personnel.
: Supports the administrative directives of the department Director/Operations Manager and Chief Physicist.

Required Qualifications :

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Medical Physicist

: Fluent in the English language.
: Experience/knowledge of computers/networking.
: Effective communication skills.

REQUIREMENTS: Medical Physicist

• Must have a Master's Degree in Radiological Medical Physics or related field
• License and registration as required –Primary Source online verification required directly from State of Michigan licensing database. Board Certification in therapeutic radiological physics.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in Radiation Therapy and progressive experience in all diagnostic imaging functions: radiologic tech, nuclear med, ultrasound tech, computer assisted tomography and radiation therapy training.
• Familiarity with Varian technology including TrueBeam.
• Expertise in treatment planning using Eclipse TPS: 3D, VMAT, IMRT, SRS, SBRT, etc.
• HDR planning using BrachyVision.
• Familiar with Pre-Treatment QA technologies: Portal Dosimetry, MapCheck, etc.
• Analytical and problem solving skills.

FACILITY SPECIFIC SECTION

: Wears radiation monitoring device.
: Utilizes computer system within the hospital guidelines, possesses skills in required computer
programs to perform daily job functions, and effectively communicates via e-mail with
professionalism.
: Responsible for maintaining assigned performance improvement initiatives and actively participates
and reports information from committee assignments.
: Encourages positive Standards of Behavior by contributing and promoting positive approaches to
inter/intra-departmental relationships on a daily basis.
: Responsible for all other duties and duty assignments requested within the scope of practice of the
license/certificate holder.
