SUMMARY: Analyze, assess, and classify applications for Life insurance in accordance with established underwriting policies, practices, and procedures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Receives, evaluates, and underwrites on a medical or non-medical basis, applications for Life Insurance up to their maximum handling limit as approved individually by the Chief Underwriter. Protects the confidentiality of all underwriting documentation and information obtained throughout the underwriting process. Maintains knowledge of materials, manuals, rules, regulations, procedures, and practices pertaining to Traditional, Universal, and Variable Life Insurance. Maintains a working knowledge of all Underwriting Systems in order to conduct business, provide On Your Side service to all internal/external customers, field partners, and members. Evaluates and rates applications requiring additional evidence of insurability. Determines the need for and authorizes the ordering of underwriting requirements to include, but not limited to medical examinations, blood profiles, home office specimens, attending physician reports, inspection reports, client direct interviews, and other necessary information. Develops a working knowledge to evaluate, appraise and quantify financial data derived from a variety of financial statements, loan agreements, buy-sell agreements, etc., to establish insurable interest in keeping with the principle of indemnification. Develops the ability to administer both automatic and facultative reinsurance within the contractual terms and conditions of various reinsurance treaties, product, and market practices. Occasionally travels to meet with and present for our field partners as needed. May obtain input and feedback during these visits to gain a greater understanding of our field partners' needs and expectations. Authorizes disbursement of policy refunds and for medical record fees requested as evidence of insurability.Consults Chief Underwriter, Staff Underwriting, Underwriting Consultants, Senior Underwriters, and the Medical Director as needed. Actively supports and assists in meeting goals and objectives for our varying territories, special agent programs, and contests. Perform other duties as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate studies in marketing, insurance, risk management, economics, finance or business management preferred. Participation in, or attainment of, professional/technical studies or designation such as the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Fellow of Life Management Institute, (FLMI), or Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) preferred.
Experience: 3 years of related work experience. Previous underwriting experience preferred.
Skills: Oral and written communication skills for contact with agents, associates, applicants for insurance, policyholders, and outside suppliers of underwriting information Ability to analyze, assess and classify life insurance risks in order to achieve company mortality and morbidity objectives. Ability to understand, anticipate, and proactively act upon customer needs. Ability to set work priorities that conform to time service and quality standards. Ability to operate a PC in a Windows-related environment and related software.
Knowledge: General knowledge of life insurance underwriting principles and practices. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and non-medical risks.
