Grants Development Intern
Fall and/or Winter Semester

 

 

The Organization

The Tanenbaum | Center for Interreligious Understanding systematically dismantles religious prejudice, hatred and violence, while simultaneously promoting justice and respect for people of all religious beliefs and none. As a secular and non-sectarian nonprofit, Tanenbaum works to promote religious peacebuilders who help counter extremism and violence in armed conflicts, and tackles religious bullying of students, harassment in workplaces, and disparate health treatment for people based on their beliefs.

 

Description of Department

The Grants Development Intern position is an exciting opportunity to impact fundraising in a small but dynamic nonprofit organization. Tanenbaum’s Development Department is responsible for developing and sustaining the organization’s financial base through the recruitment, cultivation and stewardship of individual donors and institutional funders.
 

Internship Responsibilities

The Grants Development Intern reports to the Associate Grant Writer & Coordinator, and will work 15-20 hours per week. The Grants Development Intern will be assigned a specific project to find grant funding for during the course of the internship. Activities around this effort may include:

  • Researching and identifying potential funding sources for the project.
  • Outreach to and cultivation of potential funding sources.
  • Grant proposal development (including grant writing) for the project.

The intern will take the project as far and s/he can during the course of the internship. This opportunity will provide the intern with concrete skills for finding and securing grant funding.
 

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Learn about the funding needs and our related work and programs.
  • Research private, corporate and family foundations to identify promising funding opportunities for the assigned project.
  • Make strategic recommendations for the best ways to connect to and cultivate potential funders.
  • Implement outreach and cultivation efforts to potential donors, including preparation of materials to support meetings with donors.
  • Support the grant application process, draft and submit grant proposals to prospective funders, noting key deadlines for submissions of letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports.
  • Attend and contribute to Development Department meetings as needed.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.

 

Qualifications and Expectations
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Tanenbaum.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, not required.
  • Excellent writing and research skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and create clear written materials.
  • Interest in and knowledge of grant writing or fundraising.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of initiative and ownership over assigned projects.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office; fundraising database experience preferred.
  • Represent Tanenbaum in a professional manner at all times.
  • Sense of humor.

 

 

Work Product

All work produced for Tanenbaum by the employee is the work product of Tanenbaum and may not be used by the employee outside of Tanenbaum-authorized activities.

 

 

Internship Length

This internship preferably lasts two semesters, but applicants are welcomed to apply for one semester as well. Priority will be given to applicants with an ability to contribute for at least 3 months/ one semester.

 

Compensation

The Grants Development Intern is an unpaid position. Tanenbaum will work with you and your school so that you receive academic credit for the internship.
