Job Description:

The FSC will be a primary donation requestor for TOSA. The FSC is also responsible for TOSA’s daily operations surrounding organ donation at the assigned hospital(s). This position works with the administration, physicians, nursing staff, and other key departments as necessary in the development and implementation, educational and quality programs related to donation. This includes meeting with key hospital personnel to develop a profile of the hospital and an understanding of the processes affecting the organ donation process.

The FSC may be required to accept call responsibilities at the assigned hospital according to TOSA policies and under the direction of the Clinical Administrator or designee on call. While acting in this capacity, the FSC facilitates the authorization process and coordinates the initial phases of organ donation process in conjunction with the Organ Recovery Coordinators. This position requires travel by company or personal automobile. The FSC will have access to confidential material and needs to use discretion with this information while strictly adhering to the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA) confidentiality policy.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The Family Services Coordinator (FSC) is a full-time position. Normal office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The employee will be responsible for 24-hour on-call shifts that will include evenings or weekends. The position may require occasional overnight travel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Responds to referrals under the direction of the Administrator on-call
  • Routine and special visits to assigned hospitals and other hospitals as deemed necessary
  • Communicates with on-call coordinator for appropriate responding of referrals
  • Offers potential donor families the donation opportunity and obtains authorization, past and current medical/behavioral histories
  • Consistently provides accurate and complete information regarding potential donors to the on-call coordinator and Administrator on-call
  • Follows up with the designated hospital services coordinator, on a timely basis, on occurrences impacting the donation process in the respective hospitals
  • Facilitates communication as needed between and among TOSA and other hospital staff
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with hospital and medical staff
  • Participates in post donor review with team members and appropriate management staff
  • Accountable for timely, complete and accurate database information
  • Attends and participates in development meetings either in person or by conference calls
  • Attends TOSA mandatory meetings, in addition to those deemed necessary from management
  • Maintains on-going communication with the Administrator on call and Director of Clinical Services
  • May assist with new FSC orientation
  • Seeks opportunities for professional growth

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of three to four years prior relevant work experience and a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, life sciences, social work, communications, or related fields preferred.
  • Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of the hospital critical care environment preferred.
  • Minimum two years organ procurement organization (OPO) or other donation agency experience preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate short and long-range thinking skills and planning abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a diplomatic matter while accomplishing organizational objectives with diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups and individuals.
  • Ability to perform problem solving and decision making during periods of high levels of stress.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience in public speaking and providing presentations to small or large sized audiences.
