Job Description:

Our Ideal Teammate:
The ideal ADL teammate gets fired up about applying technology to make the world more sustainable, and believes that better leveraging the power of entrepreneurship can change the world. While we work across legacy-sector industries, our work tends to be concentrated in buildings (building materials, advanced construction, prefab/offsite), energy (utilities, distributed energy), transportation (EVs, public transit), and the intersection of the three (smart cities, grid-interactive buildings). Folks with a passion for new business models and accelerating the commercialization of novel concepts in energy and buildings will do particularly well at ADL, especially those with practical background in relevant ADL industries and/or significant start-up exposure.

While we love working with folks who take a structured approach to problem-solving - as you’d expect among those with traditional consulting experience - ADL’s teammates tend to feel constrained by a traditional consulting environment. We have a bias towards action! We don’t just want to create a plan for new market entry (though we do that exceptionally well); we want to actually help launch NewCos and new lines of business. We don’t just want to run an open innovation challenge; we want to structure the agreements that are likely to break down the traditional barriers between legacy companies and scrappy innovators.

We highly value diversity, equity, and inclusion as vital parts of our company DNA. Our vision is to continue building an organization that provides the opportunity to utilize all relevant perspectives and experiences. ADL is not a  traditional consulting firm. We are a team of entrepreneurs that constantly seek opportunities to build stronger bridges between legacy-sector clients and startup stakeholders to help critical sectors modernize.

About the Role:
ADL is seeking an intern with an interest in bringing cutting-edge technologies to market utilizing a customer-driven, hands-on approach. Our work environment is collegial, friendly and fun, and the work we tackle on a daily basis is dynamic and ever-changing. The ADL internship experience is differentiated and unique in that interns often build rich commercialization and operating experience across a number of projects, as opposed to pursuing a single “deep dive” project for a fall or a semester. This affords interns higher-level conceptual and strategic learning across a diverse range of topics, and lends itself well to general management, professional services, and start-up careers. Recent ADL interns have been hired by industry-leading firms in management consulting, green buildings, biotech and government. We are located in Cambridge and have dedicated positions for MA residents and students which are sponsored by Mass CEC, but anticipate significant flexibility and remote work is likely in light of continued convenience, safety and social distancing considerations.

Core activities may include the following depending on interest and ability:

Assist with:

  • Support Partners / Principals / Engagement Managers in creating concise, data-driven presentations and written content to advance clients’ key operational priorities
  • Conduct market and technology research on leading cleantech sectors to support client decisions such as investment and partnering
  • Support outreach to scientific and entrepreneurial communities as part of focused technical solicitations
  • Support technical due diligence of emerging technologies for challenges, prizes and other inbound recruitment activities
  • Create financial analysis to help assess and define the value of various company and product related strategic decisions
  • Help drive industry engagement and thought leadership, including blog / social media activity, conferences / events, partner marketing activities, etc.
Ideal candidates will have:

  • A dedicated commitment to asking the right questions as opposed to finding the right answers
  • Self-starter who is highly motivated and responsive, and thrives under limited guidance in uncertain situations
  • Passion for enacting innovation and positive societal change in the energy sector
  • A strong and polished writing style with an advanced command of the English language
  • A strong curiosity for and natural inclination toward energy technology commercialization in challenging settings, ideally demonstrated through past activities and employment
  • Business case or consulting experience either through work or academic curriculum
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Substantive community and extracurricular participation, including working effectively in challenging and diverse group / team settings
  • College graduate or undergraduate; Graduate-level coursework is a bonus

This is a paid internship for the Fall of 2021 (Sept. 1st - Dec. 15th). Project-based work may be available prior to that based on fit and project need.
