Job Description:

"Working at ADL as a 'paid EIR' who advises leading corporates and government clients on the biggest challenges in cleantech commercialization, while also launching and growing new businesses on behalf of those clients, provides aspiring entrepreneurs a unique combination of founder-like autonomy within an established business.  Apply today to join us as we take part in driving a groundbreaking transition in energy and sustainability."

Ideal candidates will have the following characteristics:

  • An Engagement Manager typically has 3+ years of experience.
  • A self-starter who prides him / herself on getting things done, is highly motivated and responsive, and thrives under limited guidance in uncertain situations
  • A strong and polished writing/communication style with an advanced command of the English language
  • A dedicated commitment to asking the right questions as opposed to finding the right answers, and the willingness to balance patience / thinking with results
  • Passion for enacting innovation and positive societal change in the energy sector
  • A strong curiosity for and natural inclination toward building technology commercialization in challenging settings
  • Business case or consulting experience either through work or academic curriculum, including quickly solving problems in real-time such as deliverables which are behind schedule / over budget or require significant directional changes
  • Strong balance of interpersonal skills with the ability to carefully research and synthesize findings with a high degree of organization
  • Substantive community and extracurricular participation, including working effectively in challenging and diverse group / team settings
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree

Our Ideal Teammate

The ideal ADL teammate gets fired up about applying technology to make the world more sustainable, and believes that better leveraging the power of entrepreneurship can change the world. While we work across legacy-sector industries, our work tends to be concentrated in buildings (building materials, advanced construction, prefab/offsite), energy (utilities, distributed energy), transportation (EVs, public transit), and the intersection of the three (smart cities, grid-interactive buildings). Folks with a passion for new business models and accelerating the commercialization of novel concepts in energy and buildings will do particularly well at ADL, especially those with practical background in relevant ADL industries and/or significant start-up exposure.

While we love working with folks who take a structured approach to problem-solving - as you’d expect among those with traditional consulting experience - ADL’s teammates tend to feel constrained by a traditional consulting environment. We have a bias towards action! We don’t just want to create a plan for new market entry (though we do that exceptionally well); we want to actually help launch NewCos and new lines of business. We don’t just want to run an open innovation challenge; we want to structure the agreements that are likely to break down the traditional barriers between legacy companies and scrappy innovators.

We highly value diversity, equity, and inclusion as vital parts of our company DNA. Our vision is to continue building an organization that provides the opportunity to utilize all relevant perspectives and experiences. ADL is not a  traditional consulting firm. We are a team of entrepreneurs that constantly seek opportunities to build stronger bridges between legacy-sector clients and startup stakeholders to help critical sectors modernize.

Expectations of an ADL Engagement Manager - Buildings

An ADL Senior Associate or Engagement Manager typically has 3+ years of full-time work experience (but sometimes much more, accompanied by a hunger for new learning), and is expected to lead projects in buildings. A rich understanding of the leading-edge technology solutions in these spaces will help you better craft solutions for our clients and work towards launching new companies that fit a defined market niche.  ADL’s buildings practice works heavily with federal and state government agencies, so understanding the intersection of public and private sectors activities is critical, in particular how we may work with government agencies such as DOE to accelerate demand and ease market acceptance for advanced building construction.

Operating experience in an innovative organization in the buildings industry is strongly preferred, including running projects with internal teams of 3-5 people (including Analysts / Associates as direct reports and Partners offering strategic direction and client management leadership) is critical.  Versatility in interacting with and understanding of the major types of building industry stakeholders (demand, supply, enabler, R&D) ADL interacts with is essential.  Of particular value is experience in how building owners work with finance and insurance players to effectively commission and deliver projects with emerging technologies.  You will play a central role in creating new offerings or enhancing existing programs in those areas.

An ADL Engagement Manager in Buildings has an entrepreneur’s knack for driving business innovation, market assessment, scenario analysis, and strategic planning across the entire construction value chain.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to meet you!

Location

This position will be a full-time employee role based in Boston, MA.  Work schedule will be highly flexible and remote.  However, the employee must be a resident of the state of Massachusetts or willing to relocate to Massachusetts.
