General Nature of Work

The purpose of this classification is to develop and coordinate education initiatives, programs, tours and field trips for the Southern Museum.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develops, implements and coordinates educational initiatives, programs, tours and field trips for the Museum, paying particular attention to early learners including preschool children, elementary students, families, and homeschool audiences. 
  • Institutes program services and activities to meet educational standards of area schools and public interest; schedules and conducts classes, tours, workshops and programs; develops and implements lesson plans; provides information and direction; maintains related documentation.
  • Trains and coordinates staff and volunteers; develops training sessions; creates handouts and training documentation; schedules and conducts training; updates documentation accordingly.
  • Promotes educational programming; creates promotional materials, program guides, website updates, emails, news releases, flyers, brochures, etc.; maintains and updates relevant social media accounts; makes presentations to schools, community organizations, civic groups, the public or other individuals and groups;
  • Assists in developing and implementing education program budget; makes recommendations regarding budget requests; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, regulations; demonstrates an awareness of new issues, methods, equipment, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in continuing education activities; attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with staff on educational and interactive exhibition components; monitors usage, condition, upkeep and cleaning; provides recommendations on updates and change-outs; develops related content.
  • Contributes to planning and implementation of special events; coordinates educational components and necessary staffing requirements; provides information and direction as needed; helps with logistical support before, during and after event, including set up, tear down, cleaning and customer service functions.
  • Performs related administrative duties; researches, compiles and/or monitors administrative or statistical data pertaining to department operations; summarizes data, performs routine data analysis and prepares reports; processes registrations for tours and programs; prepares and processes invoices and payments.
  • Carries out customer service functions: greets visitors, tour groups, teachers, class participants, instructors and volunteers; provides information/assistance regarding Museum services, activities, procedures, forms, fees or other issues; accepts monies and fees; responds to questions, complaints or requests for service; initiates problem resolution.
  • Keeps inventory of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; prepares and forwards purchase requisitions for needed materials, equipment, and supplies; receives/distributes incoming supply shipments.
  • Communicates with supervisor, City employees, educators, volunteers, the public, outside agencies and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems or give/receive advice/direction.
  • Prepares, types, proofreads and/or completes various forms, reports, registration sheets, sign-in sheets, instructor agreements, invoices, field trip policies, schedules, charts, graphs, spreadsheets and other documents.
  • Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software; works with art supplies and craft materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce and/or assess data using established criteria. Includes exercising discretion in determining actual or probable consequences and in referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternatives.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide formal training to others in specific fields typically involving preparation and/or modification of teaching materials.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. May include counting, recording of counts and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, History or related field; supplemented by two year(s) of progressively responsible experience in education, educational programming or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
 

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
