Job Description of Creative Writer Adjunct:


Stivers School for the Arts hires professionals to impart their artistic expertise to our students.


Creative Writing adjuncts may be called upon to teach our students to produce written work in the form of poetry, lyrical compositions, screenplays, short stories, memoirs, novels, editorial articles, etc.  With mastery of the written and spoken word, Creative Writing adjuncts foster our students’ personal writing style and ability to convey deep themes that illuminate the human condition.


Creative Writing adjuncts must be able to act as teachers and work independently to plan and deliver lessons that are submitted weekly to the department director. Adjuncts help students to prepare for performances and publications.  Curriculum is adjusted to the expertise of the adjunct, but we are most in need of one who can teach script writing, poetry/spoken word, and/or novel -- likely to 10th and/or 11th graders. (Once part of the team, positions may shift with need from year to year.) Adjuncts also are asked to grade student work and provide targeted feedback to help students improve their craft. Adjuncts work Monday-Friday for up to 15 hours, teaching 2-3 classes per day.


1 year or more experience in 2 or more of these fields preferred:

  • Screenplay
  • Poetry/Spoken word
  • Novel/ Novella
  • Lyrical composition/ Song writing
  • Storytelling
  • Short story
  • Memoir

Job Requirements:

  • Communication skill
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to maintain a professional persona in a classroom environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing, English or equivalent work experience (Preferred)
