General Nature of Work
 

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Programs Coordinator, the Assistant Camp Director will be responsible for assisting the Camp Director with the daily operation of a recreational summer day camp for elementary school aged children. Activity areas include indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, arts and crafts, on-site enrichment programs, and field trips; as well as group lunches and snack time.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  • Support Camp Director in all their duties and effectively carry out assigned responsibilities
 
  • Communicate with Camp Director to determine daily responsibilities
 
  • Ensure consistent and smooth implementation of daily operational procedures
 
  • Training and motivating volunteer counselors in training and reviewing progress
 
  • Organizing counselors in training workloads and assignments
 
  • Pre-camp planning and daily programming for up to 150 participants each day
 
  • The health, safety and care of all participants, staff and volunteers
 
  • The care of supplies, equipment and facilities
 
  • Procurement of camp supplies, equipment, and snack items as needed
 
  • Following and enforcing all policies outlined in the camp training and city personnel manuals
 
  • Handling discipline issues and emergency situations
 
  • Rendering first aid in cases of minor injuries
 
  • Communicating with campers parents/guardians
 
  • Maintaining and monitoring accurate records and forms such as volunteer counselor in training time sheets, attendance (sign-in and sign-out sheets), behavioral incidents, accident reports, parental communication and medical issues
 
  • Performing daily inspections of camp with regards to safety and cleanliness
 
  • Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs
 
  • Will cross train with the splash pad if needed
 
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks as directed

MININUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Applicant must be 17 years of age or older.
 
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in art, recreation, education or a closely related field is strongly desired.
 
  • At least two (2) years of paid or volunteer experience planning, organizing and supervising art and recreational activities for groups of children ages 5-12 in a structured environment is preferred. Individuals with a background in physical education or formal art instruction are strongly desired.
 
  • Applicant must have considerable knowledge of summer camp planning and administration.
 
  • Applicant must have strong leadership, customer service and interpersonal skills.
 
  • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Exceptional communication skills are essential.
 
  • Applicant must have PC computer skills, particularly with the internet, e-mail, MS Excel and Word documents.
 
  • Applicant must be willing to work cooperatively with others.
 
  • Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
 
  • Applicant must provide their own transportation.
 
  • Applicant must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
 
  • Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without an accommodation.
 
  • Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 26 through July 31.
 
  • Applicant must be able to attend a mandatory Assistant Camp Director training scheduled during daytime hours from May 14 through May 15.  
 
  • Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions scheduled Saturday, May 16 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
 
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Pre-Employment Requirements
 

  • Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
 
  • Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
 
  • Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross, Heartsaver, or American Heart Association and must be obtained prior to employment start date at the applicant’s expense.
 
  • Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
 

Work Environment: Essential functions are regularly performed inside/outside with exposure to the elements.
