Established in 2011, the New American Integration Program (NAIP) places AmeriCorps members at community-based organizations to support immigrant integration across Massachusetts. Up to 30 NAIP members will serve a minimum of 1700 hours of service (~40 hours/week) at partner sites across Massachusetts to provide job readiness training, ESOL/civics instruction, and/or citizenship application assistance. Through high quality training and experience, NAIP AmeriCorps members, many of whom are from immigrant and refugee communities themselves, become skilled and passionate service providers, educators, interpreters and leaders by the end of their service.
 

The 2020-2021 service term begins on September 1, 2020 until July 30, 2021. Applications to serve in 2020-2021 will be accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps, you must:

  • Be a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States;
  • Be at least 18 years or older;
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Be willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks;
  • Additional requirements vary by host site.

Benefits

All NAIP members will receive equal benefits, regardless of site placement:

  • A living stipend up to $14,300 (approx. $595 every two weeks, before taxes);
  • Monthly MBTA pass, or equivalent travel reimbursement for members serving outside Boston;
  • Education Award up to $6,195 upon completion of service;
  • Forbearance on eligible student loans while in service, plus payments for accrued interest upon successful completion of service;
  • Health insurance;
  • Child care assistance for qualifying individuals:
  • Upfront and ongoing training and professional development, including an opportunity to obtain a 120-hour certificate to Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Essential Functions

All NAIP members are expected to:

  • Attend all corps-wide training in Boston, including orientation and monthly member meetings
  • Complete weekly and monthly reporting requirements to document your AmeriCorps service
  • Participate in a program-wide group project to benefit the field of immigrant integration
  • Carry out all assigned responsibilities at the host site, which may include:
  • Job readiness and/or job placement services
  • Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Assisting with applications for citizenship and/or provide civics instruction

Marginal Functions

All NAIP members will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in optional MIRA and ENB events and training
  • Lead a final group project to benefit the field of immigrant integration
  • At the direction of your host site, you may also have the opportunity to:
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers
  • Provide community interpreting and translation
  • Provide referrals to relevant community services

Established in 2011, the New American Integration Program (NAIP) is a partnership between MIRA and English for New Bostonians aimed at increasing community organizations’ capacity to support immigrant integration across our Commonwealth.

 

Up to 30 AmeriCorps members serve nearly 5,000 immigrants and refugees from over 106 different countries every year. Members are placed at immigrant- and refugee-serving organizations across the Commonwealth, serving residents of Greater Boston, Lynn, MetroWest, Central Massachusetts, New Bedford, and the Merrimack Valley.
 

Members commit to a full-time service position while receiving a modest living allowance, health benefits, training, and an educational award at completion of service.
 

NAIP AmeriCorps Members assist immigrants and refugees gain economic stability and more fully participate in our society through learning English, applying for citizenship, job readiness training, and accessing community services. Through high quality training and experience, NAIP AmeriCorps members, many of whom are from immigrant and refugee communities themselves, become skilled and passionate service providers, educators, interpreters and leaders.


In 2018–2019, our 28 NAIP members served 3,859 clients: teaching English, helping immigrants and refugees find jobs, and submitting 1,847 citizenship applications. Our 2019–2020 cohort includes 24 AmeriCorps members serving at nonprofits across Massachusetts, including three at MIRA.
