Job Description:

In support of the DrPH Program Strategy for Advancing Racial Equity (ARE), the UIC School of Public Health seeks 2-3 candidates for adjunct positions for the 2023-24 academic year who will strengthen the diversity of the DrPH program faculty with regard to professional and lived experience, scholarly training and discipline, and social demographics. This document provides an overview of the DrPH program, the adjunct faculty role, and key steps in the recruitment process.

Description: The DrPH program is designed to bridge public health scholarship and practice, and requires a faculty that brings diverse skills, perspectives, and areas of expertise related to public health leadership and practice. We seek adjunct faculty members whose teaching and scholarship align with our program principles of leading public health through equity, evidence, adaptive leadership, and systems change. Successful candidates should have methodological expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods through demonstrated scholarship and/or practice. Adjunct faculty will serve as members of the DrPH program faculty team, a small and dynamic group of scholars from across divisions at the UIC School of Public Health.

Specific roles and responsibilities of adjunct faculty may include:

  • Teaching: Adjunct faculty will teach one course per academic year. This may include core courses and may allow for the opportunity to develop courses designed to meet student needs/interests.

  • Advising: Adjunct faculty will serve on a limited number of dissertation committees as well as chair a limited number of dissertation committees.

  • Service: Adjunct faculty will participate in DrPH program activities, including faculty meetings and the annual Summer Institute.

Core courses include adaptive leadership and application, strategic management, and qualitative and quantitative research methods. Special topic courses include research design and systems thinking.

Adjunct faculty are required to participate in orientation and training sessions and to comply with academic and institutional policies. A learning management system is used to post syllabi and other materials and communicate with students.

Location: The DrPH program is a fully remote program that engages working professionals from across the US and around the world. This position can be fulfilled remotely with one strongly preferred in-person travel recommendation to the Chicago area each August for the DrPH Program Summer Institute.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will meet the following qualifications:

  • A completed doctoral degree in public health or a related field (e.g., community health, public health, psychology, sociology, anthropology, public policy, or a related social science discipline)
  • Professional practice experience including leadership roles in public health, healthcare, social services, research, or policy

  • Experience in anti-racist, equity-forward, and social justice leadership approaches to impact policy and systems change
  • A passion for using multiple research methods to advance practice-engaged scholarship in public health

Adjunct positions are part-time positions with modest compensation. While adjunct faculty may not be eligible for many benefits, such as health care, they may still be eligible to participate in the State Universities Retirement System. Compensation will be based on the course load and administrative tasks such as chairing dissertation committees.
